December 31, 2010 12:08    |    by jgreen

New York Philharmonic

For vacationers that have an ear for good music, a performance by Manhattan‘s symphony orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, is a must-see for any visit to New York City. Established in 1842, this New York City orchestra puts on numerous performances every year at Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center.

Due to its popularity and exceptional performances, the orchestra has become considered a member of the “Big Five” musical ensembles in the United States. The group has performed numerous genres of music, including classical, jazz and holiday music.

The Lincoln Center is located in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan. Due to its upscale appearance and convenient location, vacationers often choose to stay in apartments in the Upper West Side of New York City. *Hint* AptNewYork.com is a helpful website filled with furnished apartment listings for vacationers, buyers, students and travelers.

Visitors to Manhattan that stay in Upper West Side apartments will find easy access to New York Philharmonic performances by taking either the 1 or 2 metro train to the 66th Street station. The Lincoln Center and the Avery Fisher Hall are located just across the street from the station.

Vacationers staying in a Manhattan apartment in the near future may find interest in the following performances scheduled by the New York Philharmonic:

December 30, 2010 12:35    |    by jgreen

Vacation New York and experience music history and see famous artist landmarksNew York City is the perfect vacation destination for die hard rock and roll fans everywhere. Many artists have made their names and famous records in the countless recording studios and entertainment venues in NYC.

You’re Rock and Roll NYC vacation starts with finding the most affordable accommodations that provide a luxurious and convenient stay. Once you have arrived in NYC, you’ll definitely want to visit these NYC music landmarks:

  1. Strawberry Fields – Before his premature death in 1980, Lennon and Yoko Ono spent numerous afternoons in Central Park. To remember Lennon, Ono and supporters created a memorial site near the West 72nd Street entrance to the park which is named after the childhood park that Lennon played in and later made famous in a song of the same name with The Beatles.
  2. Hotel ChelseaA great NYC vacation with a musical twist should not exclude a trip to the famous Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan, located at 222 West 23rd Street. This landmark housing building was the home to many recording artists, including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Iggy Pop. It may be better remembered for the 1978 stabbing deaths of Sex Pistols’ member Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.
  3. Electric Lady Studios - Located at 52 West 8th Street, ELS was originally built by rock and roll legend Jimi Hendrix and opened in 1970. NYC vacation goers will revel in the studio’s rich history where famous artists such as The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Led Zeppelin, and Kanye West have recorded platinum albums for decades.

While these locations are all found in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn also have a deep history of producing rock and roll legends. Exploring the streets of NYC are great for vacation plans as you never know what famous New York landmark you will come across while staying in a vacation rental in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island or the Bronx.

Vacation NYC: Top 3 New York City Movie Locations

December 23, 2010 15:36    |    by jgreen

Vacation NYC and Experience the Movies

There are few cities that are more recognized by moviegoers than New York City. Every year, millions of visitors choose to vacation NYC to see firsthand the famous film sets that they grew up watching in theaters. To help you plan the perfect NYC movie vacation, I have compiled a list of my top five NYC movie locations.

  1. Night at the Museum (2006) – The exhibits in Manhattan’s famous Museum of Natural History literally come to life at night in this family classic as NYC’s native comedic actor, Ben Stiller, plays an overnight security guard that’s just trying to make a living. Little does he know that the fate of the world will soon rest on his shoulders as he tries to maintain order among cowboys, gladiators and ancient dinosaurs!
  2. Big (1988) – When you were a kid, did you dislike being told what to do by adults? In this NYC classic, Tom Hanks plays a youngster trapped in the body of a 30-year-old man after making a wish upon an arcade machine. The film features several NYC landmarks, but most people recognize one scene in particular where Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia’s characters perform Chopsticks on an oversized keyboard at the world-famous toy store, FAO Schwarz. Today, visitors to the store can have a go at recreating this popular scene.
  3. I Am Legend (2007) – To pull off a great vacation NYC with a twist of Hollywood, visitors should be sure and take a stroll through Fifth Avenue. This larger than life shopping district has been featured in countless films, including the Will Smith blockbuster, I Am Legend. Possibly the last human survivor after  a terrible virus kills the population, Smith’s character lives in total isolation with his dog on the streets of the Big Apple. While Smith may be the last human survivor in NYC, a dark force lurks in the shadows.

These are only a few of my favorite NYC film locations. For an insider’s look at NYC in Hollywood, visitors can take movie and television tours that stop at several locations. If you plan on vacationing in New York, be sure and check out AptNewYork.com for conveniently located rentals!

Find Your Community in Brooklyn!

December 22, 2010 22:25    |    by srichman

Whenever I suggest moving to Brooklyn, most people reply with: “What’s the point of moving to the Big Apple if I’m not going to be in the center of it all?” In truth, the only real positive of living “in the center of it all” is, well… living in the center of it all. Granted, that’s a huge positive, but it can become overwhelming; also, the “center of it all” comes at a high price, as in an extra few thousand dollars.
A city girl myself I was apprehensive about moving to Brooklyn, I thought I would miss the noise, the people, the endless night life, but effected by the economy, like everyone else, I had little choice. When I got there I found that the calm of Brooklyn was actually a positive – no one screaming in the middle of the night, no drunk people harassing me as I ran to the corner store, and no creepy taxis fallowing me down the street.

When I got to Brooklyn I feared a lack of 24/hour establishments to feed middle of night cravings but, to my surprise, within blocks of me there are all types of late night bars, delis, and coffee shops.

Brooklyn is also just as eclectic as Manhattan in terms of it’s people, events, and culture – if not more so. Every one from college students to families live nearby, I can find my normal snack food as well as (to my surprise) sweets that I discovered while living in Brazil. There are concerts, art events (such as the Bushwick wide event Beta Spaces), warehouse parties that you can’t find in Manhattan (such the famous Danger Parties that take place all over brooklyn), and places like Brooklyn Boulders in Gawanus, that makes Brooklyn unique.
But, by far, the greatest part of living in Brooklyn is the community. While in Manhattan you are more likely to run into that random guy you met in a cafe in France, in Brooklyn you find yourself sitting on the subway with friends, or running into them at the normal haunts, such as the trendy Life Cafe (I highly recommend their home fries).

I wasn’t the only person forced to live in cheaper dwellings, and quickly found more and more people nearby whom I was already, or become, close to. All the places I listed above were frequented by my neighbors creating a close knit community you could never find in Manhattan. If you really want a place to call home, a place where people know your name, and the owner of the local deli will order Rye bread just for you, Brooklyn is the way to go.
